Gene Hackman, Wife Betsy Arakawa, and Dog Found Dead in Santa Fe Home; Two Dogs Survive Under Mysterious Circumstances

Legendary Actor’s Passing Shocks Fans as Police Launch Investigation Into "Suspicious" Incident

Santa Fe, New Mexico – February 27, 2025

Retired Hollywood icon Gene Hackman, 95, his wife Betsy Arakawa, 80, and one of their three dogs were discovered deceased in their Santa Fe residence on Thursday under circumstances authorities have deemed “suspicious.” Two other dogs were found alive at the scene, with no immediate signs of injury. Local law enforcement has launched a full investigation, though details remain scarce.

Discovery and Initial Response

The Santa Fe Police Department reported that the couple was found unresponsive during a wellness check initiated after concerned friends were unable to reach them for several days. Officers arrived at the secluded property in the early afternoon, where they discovered the bodies of Hackman, Arakawa, and one of their dogs. Two additional dogs were located alive inside the home and are currently under veterinary care.

Police spokesperson Lt. Maria Gonzales stated, “This is an active and complex investigation. We are treating the scene with utmost caution and cannot speculate on causes of death until forensic analysis is complete.” No suspects have been identified, and the department has not confirmed whether foul play is suspected.

A Legacy in Hollywood and a Quiet Retirement

Hackman, a two-time Academy Award winner renowned for roles in *The French Connection* (1971) and *Unforgiven* (1992), retired from acting in 2004. He and Arakawa, an interior designer and pianist, married in 1991 and chose to live a private life in Santa Fe, far from the Hollywood spotlight. Friends described them as devoted to each other and their pets, often seen walking their dogs in nearby trails.

“Gene cherished his quiet life here. He painted, wrote novels, and stayed out of the public eye,” said longtime neighbor Clara Martinez. “This is unimaginable.”

The Investigation Unfolds

Forensic teams spent hours combing the property for evidence, while detectives interviewed neighbors and reviewed security footage from the area. Authorities emphasized that the surviving dogs—a Labrador retriever and a mixed breed—may provide critical clues. Animal behavior experts have been consulted to assess the dogs’ reactions and physical condition.

While autopsies are pending, speculation has swirled online, with theories ranging from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning to targeted crime. However, Lt. Gonzales urged the public to avoid conjecture: “Jumping to conclusions undermines the process. We ask for patience as we work to honor the truth for the Hackman family.”

Tributes and Mourning

News of Hackman’s death prompted an outpouring of grief from fans and colleagues. Actor Clint Eastwood, who co-starred with Hackman in *Unforgiven*, called him “a consummate professional and a fiercely kind man.” The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tweeted, “Gene Hackman’s brilliance illuminated cinema. Our hearts are with his loved ones.”

Local residents laid flowers near the couple’s home, while social media tributes highlighted Hackman’s iconic roles and Arakawa’s support of local arts charities.

Ongoing Updates

As the investigation continues, the world awaits answers. The Hackman family has requested privacy, releasing a brief statement: “We are devastated by this loss and grateful for the support during this painful time.”

Authorities plan to release preliminary autopsy results within 48 hours. For now, the tranquil streets of Santa Fe remain unsettled by the enigmatic tragedy that has silenced a Hollywood legend and the quiet life he cherished.
