Why you should never eat honey with a metal spoon?

Some are equipped with a dedicated spoon, while others are satisfied with a simple metal spoon to serve themselves with honey. While everyone is satisfied with their method, they are not all equal. And for good reason, using a metal spoon is not so harmless for health.

Honey is composed of enzymes that contribute to its many benefits.

The metal of the spoons reacts when it comes into contact with the acidity of the honey.

The use of a wooden spoon is recommended to preserve the benefits of the product.

What you need to know about honey

The composition of honey can vary slightly depending on the flowers foraged by bees. In any case, it is mainly composed of sugars, namely glucose and fructose, water, vitamins and minerals. But honey also contains enzymes, which give it an antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action.

Beyond its sweetening power, honey offers many health benefits. In particular, it promotes wound healing and contains antioxidant properties. Nutritionists can also recommend it as an alternative to sugar in certain diets.

The impact of metal spoons on honey

Beyond practicality, the honey spoon, historically made of wood, was also designed to preserve the properties of the product. And for good reason, the enzymes contained in honey are said to be sensitive to the metals used in the composition of certain current spoons.  Metal would produce salts when in contact with the acidic pH of honey, subsequently damaging the natural enzymes of the substance. This would reduce the effectiveness of the properties of honey. The taste of the product can also be altered by prolonged contact with the metal, that is to say if the spoon is left in the jar.

Which spoon should you choose?

Even if scientific evidence is lacking on the subject, purists assure that it is preferable to use a wooden honey spoon. Although it is more difficult to wash, the material is entirely compatible with the acidity of the substance, ensuring total preservation of its properties. Wood being porous, it also facilitates the adhesion of honey to the spoon and allows the desired quantity to be delivered.

Nevertheless, some scientists believe that using a metal spoon would have no effect, provided that it is not left in the jar for a long time and that it is perfectly washed and dried after use.

What is considered the healthiest food in the world?

Also called watercress or officinal, watercress is an aquatic perennial plant that is recognized by its small rounded leaves.

Remarkable for its vegetative reproduction capabilities, this watercress is especially known for its health benefits, like garden cress.

You can integrate it into the menu in different ways to stock up on vitamins and prevent certain diseases.
Gardeners, take note! To have watercress on hand, grow it on your balcony or in a small patch of soil. Easy to grow, it should never be eaten in the wild. It can harbor liver flukes, a parasite responsible for serious liver disease. Contraindicated for pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under seven, it prevents ailments related to aging. And what's more, it's not lacking in flavor!

Watercress, ancient origins?

Known for centuries, watercress appears in the Capitulary De Villis, a legislative act dating from the end of the 8th century or the beginning of the 9th century, which lists a hundred plants. Its cultivation is recommended because of its medicinal properties. Common in the waterways of France, this vegetable plant from the Brassicaceae family like cabbages and mustard reaches about twenty centimeters in height. Since the 19th century, it has also been cultivated in watercress beds.

The health benefits of this food

To boost your immune defenses, nothing beats this food rich in vitamins C, A and K. Watercress also has the advantage of being composed of calcium, potassium, magnesium and iron. All these nutrients contribute to the overall prevention of health. Depurative, antioxidant, diuretic, tonic, watercress helps detoxify the body.

Its antioxidant action is also interesting. Thanks to the carotenoids and flavonoids it contains, it prevents the development of certain cancers (lung, colorectal, etc.) and cardiovascular diseases. It also reduces cognitive decline, in particular by protecting against cellular aging.

When used externally, this plant firms the scalp and treats dental problems. In addition to treating gingivitis, the plant firms the gums.

How can watercress be consumed?

Watercress is used in various culinary preparations. It is possible to cook its leaves like spinach. But be careful, cooking removes its medicinal properties. It is therefore better to eat watercress raw, provided that you do not consume it in the wild to avoid liver problems.

Use it as a filling in a sandwich or with hard-boiled eggs for example. Its spicy taste is reminiscent of white radish, with a slightly peppery flavor as an addition.

In chopped form, this watercress looks like parsley and enhances soups, salads, quiches or omelettes. You can also make a juice to drink before meals. And in drugstores, you will find watercress in the form of a bottle or drinkable ampoules.
